Scott Kattenbraker currently lives and works in Olympia, WA and primarily exhibits at juried art festivals across the US. Much of his inspiration comes from outsider and contemporary folk art. Foraging through scrap yards and abandoned detritus is a favorite source for materials, ideas and forms. Devising scenarios with vague and sometimes arbitrary plans, I try and give the art making process front seat. I've come to enjoy setting up simple obstacles in the studio as well as on the canvas. I work with the hope of slowly building/layering/weaving a history of hour, days and emotions into a single painting.
You will find three galleries on the webpage as I have been following several concepts as of late. The most recent "Shapes to Sound" page comes from my interest in sacred geometry, ratios and angles. I use guitar templates, parts and components to create designs then I begin the process of painting with acrylics on paper or canvas. This process allows me take more of a design role in the art making.
Secondly, in the "painting" page you will see a handful of abstract paintings that are also new to my repertoire. These came about during a frustrating day in the studio. After struggling with a particular painting I couldn't quite get right, I decided to scroll my comments of dissatisfaction directly onto the painting. It was actually quite cathartic. From that I decided to see what kind of feelings/emotions I could transfer through a paintings of words, poetry and prose overtop more passages. As I pursued this further it became clear this would be a perfect medium to relay my own writings, rants and wordplay. Words and meaning connect and line up in mysterious and unpredictable ways once layered overtop one another. I intend to obscure the message to the degree that the viewer might only catch just a few ideas or translations. It's always exciting to watch an individual try and make sense of the words as they try and decode.
